The decision by the DNC to block the public viewing regarding its own autopsy report on the 2024 election seems shocking but to be expected. Opposed to frank assessments, the Democrats' governing body behaves more like a PR firm than an electoral entity devoted to building local power for winning elections.
Unwilling to depart from the prevailing attitude demanding unity, the DNC has remained under the Biden-Harris shadow throughout 2025. Making public the findings would have indicated that party leaders actually want to encourage open debate about the missteps that paved the way for the former president to become president again. Yet, the DNC is proceeding as if there are no lessons to glean from the tragic debacle from the last cycle.
"Here’s our North Star: is this good for winning elections? If not, it is an unnecessary diversion from the core mission," a justification reportedly given for withholding the analysis.
A genuine analysis with any value would not dodge key points of failure. Among them are:
The decision to withhold is consistent with a longstanding habit of evading uncomfortable facts. It recalls an episode where virtually every elected Democrat in Washington went along with an incumbent's insistence on seeking another term right up until a poor public debate performance led to an exit.
At the same time, large majorities of Democratic voters had been continually telling surveyors that they did not want the incumbent to seek re-election.
An honest analysis might also examine issues about campaign spending, including the amounts went to high-priced advisors as well as media firms over the course of an electoral effort that managed to spend a staggering war chest over a few months.
At its core, the secrecy regarding the analysis points to a deference to the established hierarchy that oversaw a disastrous national race. The message to ordinary supporters – which includes millions of small donors – appears to be that they do not have a right to understand the lessons party chiefs have learned from hundreds of interviews drawing from feedback from all states.
A political entity unable to critically review where it went wrong is unlikely to escape the cycle that proved so advantageous to their opponents.
